Clear, fair and consistent assessment rubrics with focus on what is important for the attainment of the intended learning outcomes contribute to the effective assessment of students’ performance and the achievement of learning outcomes.
Purpose
The purpose of this practice is to assess students’ performance and the achievement of learning outcomes in a clear and fair manner. Rubrics can be designed in various formats, such as checklist, rating scale, descriptive or analytic rubrics and holistic scoring guide to assess the knowledge and skills students acquired at different stages. It gives students a clear indication of what level of achievement is expected.
Outcome
The outcome of employing this practice is maintaining a fair and consistent assessment of learning outcomes across different courses/cohorts by means of assessment rubrics. It also facilitates continuous improvement in teaching by reviewing student achievements against the rubrics.
